A lovely Life Sim where you run a supermarket. The story is challenging to go through, as it touches on complicated subjects and sometimes makes the people in-game angry, but it serves a purpose. Completion takes around 20 hours, and it has no missable achievements.

I love running shops in games, and Discounty is no different. You don't have to set prices in this game, but you design the layout, keeping control over stocking the items and helping people at the register. At first, you have to add the prices manually, but very soon, you can buy a scanner upgrade and scan the items, which is so much easier and quicker. You might also be struggling with keeping the shelves stocked while also cleaning the store and helping customers, but it gets easier later on. I felt like this struggle added to the story, don't stress out too much if you can't keep all the balls in the air. Sometimes you aren't supposed to keep them all in the air ;).

The story is less wholesome than you might expect from the cute and gorgeous looks of this game. It touches on a lot of serious topics, and from time to time, the NPCs in-game are angry at you for decisions you didn't even make. There was one point in the game where I could see what would happen as it was a bit of a repeat, and didn't want to talk to a specific person to continue the storyline, but at some point you kinda have to if you want to beat the game :P. What this also tells you is that the game did a good job of making me care for the story and the town you're working in.

One of the many things I enjoyed was the daily and weekly challenges for the store. And you get points with those to unlock a new item for the story, or a skill. This was such a clever way to unlock those things. Same with the local suppliers, they have challenges to sell X amount of items to unlock a skill point to get a discount or to be able to get more stock from them. These are not challenges to stress about, as you lose nothing by not getting them; there are always more days with new challenges, and it serves as an admirable goal to work toward on a day.

While I had a lovely time playing Discounty and couldn't stop playing, two minor things got a bit annoying after a while: the first one is that when you start talking with NPCs, they can have quite a long story the moment you start the conversation, without you having asked anything yet. And this helps at first with the world-building. You learn a lot more about them this way. After a while and with repeated texts, it can be a bit annoying if you want to ask them a small thing, or want to buy something from them. Gladly, there is a button to speed up the text. The second was the overview after finishing a day in the shop. At first, it is nice and tells you what you can improve and how much money you made, but you can't speed this up, and you will go through every item. And so at first the list isn't so long, waiting for the results isn't too bad, but it gets longer. I hope the developers can add a button to instantly get the results if wished, instead of always having to wait to go through it.

It takes around 20 hours to unlock all the achievements in Discounty. There are no missable achievements, and you can get back into the game after finishing the story. Most of the achievements are story-related or will unlock over time.

I give Discounty 4 out of 5 stars.
