The best way to do this is to keep all production on a single asteroid (one with a good amount of landing craters since you'll need to import 2 or 3 resources), and focus on getting the upgrades above all else. As the game tells you, you can check the in-game wiki to see the recipes for everything.
It's not hard, it just takes a bit of time to set up & execute.
